Art Show | Silvy Scherr

Join us for our 3rd Annual Silvy Scherr Art Show, Friday, November 4th from 7 to 9 pm at The Archive! Silvy will be here to discuss her latest series, followed by a brief Q&A session. It'll be open to the public so come on by. Bring your family, friends and make a fun evening out of it!

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Morocco and spending her formative years in France and Israel, Silvy has made Coconut Grove her home for over thirty years. Silvy began her career as an artist with an interest in miniature ink drawings and has evolved moving toward oil and acrylic on traditional and found surfaces where she uses thick layers of paint for that weathered appearance.

Silvy work captures the space between abstraction and realism through action and movement of symbolic objects and the human form, creating at once a sense of recognition and ambiguity. She explores the unusual object in part or whole and the human form in the context of others or alone in space that is opaque, enigmatic, yet understood.

Love Your Selfie Workshop

In today's day and age, we are so used to instant gratification. Snap a picture of yourself, post it, and wait for the likes and comments to come flooding in. Although we are not opposed to selfies, we are giving a different meaning to the word "selfie" in this workshop.

With our "Love Your Selfie" workshop you will be painting yourself! Your very own self portrait. Our resident artist and your instructor Ana Trelles Portuondo will break down the somewhat daunting task of painting yourself in an easy to understand yet fun way! We will have music and mimosas so get ready for a fun-filled afternoon!

Price: $65.00 (Includes the cost of materials and mimosas)

Artist / Instructor: Ana Trelles Portuondo

Do I Bring Anything? Nope! Just yourself please :)

How Many Spots Are Available? Because we focus on creating curated, intimate workshops and classes we only have space for 10 people so hurry and register!

"The Meter Man of Le Moutrechon" Film

If you’re like most people, you’ve been pretty good about putting change in the parking meter. Okay, so maybe you’ve gotten your (un)fair share of parking tickets. And you’ve tried your best to control yourself in these situations with varying degrees of success. But that rage still simmers deep within the constitution of your soul, the very spot where pride and joie de vivre trumps all petty misdemeanors and dumb people in dumb uniforms with dumb jobs whose stupidity (make that worthlessness!) costs you extremely valuable time and money. Because there’s only one thing worse than parking meters and parking tickets. His name? The Meter Man. This film is your chance for some revenge...

Art Show | 3rd Annual Florida Highwaymen Exhibit

Exhibit Period: April 8th - May 15th, 2016

HISTORY OF THE FLORIDA HIGHWAYMEN

The Florida Highwaymen were a group of twenty-six African-American artists from the 1950's to the 1980's. They painted landscapes of underdeveloped parts of Florida through the use of vivid and bright colors. Many of their paintings consist of wind-bent palm trees, serene sunsets, oceans and bright Poinciana trees.

In the 1980's, when trends changed, the Florida Highwaymen parted ways. However, due to a recent surge in demand for their work, several of the original highwaymen have started painting again. In 2004, the twenty-six original Florida Highwaymen were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. The original paintings are highly regarded and come at a high demand by collectors and enthusiasts such as Shaquille O'Neal and Jerry Seinfeld to name a few.

"EL MAR Y EL" Film

About the Film:

El MAR y EL is a short film comedy based loosely on director Tony Mendez's uncle's experience coming to America from Cuba during the "Mariel boat lift." The title and subject of the film is based on the roughly 125,000 Cubans who emigrated from Cuba to Miami in 1980. This exodus happened because of political dissatisfaction in the years following the Cuban revolution as well as a sharp downturn in the economy. The Mariel agreement ended after the U.S. discovered that Fidel Castro was sending not only political dissidents and other disaffected citizens but also felons and the criminally insane to America.

Many Cuban-Americans today can trace their ancestry and American citizenship to this event. Moreover, historians and economists identify the Mariel boat lift as a vital catalyst in the emergence of Miami as a major American city. Today, you'll find the city of Miami (and other American cities) bustling with the ingenuity and pride of Cuban people and culture.

Awards:

The John Hopkins Film Festival - Official Selection 2015

University of Miami Canes Film Festival - Best Thesis Film, Best Actor (Yubran Luna), Best Producing, Best Directing, Best Editing
